By Firefly Laser – Facial – Body
One of the advantages of treating thousands of laser hair removal clients every year is that we begin to notice the same mistakes happening again and again.
The good news?
Most of these mistakes are completely avoidable.
Sometimes, a simple change in your routine can make a huge difference in your results.
These are the most common mistakes we see every week at Firefly Laser Bali. If you are still learning how the treatment works, start with our full guide to laser hair removal in Bali before booking your sessions.
1. Waxing Between Laser Sessions
This is probably the biggest mistake we encounter.
We once had a client who came to us after several laser sessions at another clinic feeling frustrated because she had seen very little improvement.
After a short conversation, we discovered something important.
She had been waxing between every laser appointment.
Nobody had explained that waxing removes the entire hair from the follicle.
And that is exactly what the laser needs in order to work effectively.
Laser hair removal works by sending energy through the hair shaft into the follicle.
When the hair has been removed by waxing, plucking or an epilator, there is little or no hair left to carry that energy.
The result?
The treatment becomes much less effective.
This experience reminded us how important proper education is before beginning laser hair removal.
Between laser sessions, shaving is always the recommended method. For a deeper comparison, read our guide to laser vs waxing in Bali.
2. Stopping Treatment Too Early Because the Results Already Look Great
This is actually one of our favourite “problems.”
Thanks to modern laser technology, many of our clients notice visible reduction after only one or two sessions.
Sometimes the improvement is so impressive that they tell us:
“I do not think I need another session.”
We completely understand why they feel that way.
However, visible improvement does not always mean every follicle has been treated.
Hair grows in different cycles, and some follicles may not yet have entered the Anagen active growth phase, when laser treatment is most effective.
That is why we generally recommend continuing your sessions every 3-5 weeks, according to your therapist’s advice, until your treatment plan is complete.
Even after achieving your desired result, we often recommend one or two additional sessions.
These treatments help target hairs that entered the ideal growth phase later in the process, giving you a better chance of long-lasting hair reduction.

3. Too Much Sun After Laser Hair Removal
Living in Bali means sunshine almost every day.
It is one of the reasons people love being here.
But immediately after laser treatment, your skin becomes more sensitive.
Sometimes we even smile when scrolling through Instagram and recognise one of our clients relaxing at the beach the day after their appointment.
Our first thought is always:
“We hope they are wearing sunscreen.”
Going to the beach is not necessarily the problem.
The real concern is direct sun exposure on freshly treated skin, especially during the first 48 hours.
Your skin is temporarily more sensitive, which can increase the risk of irritation or pigmentation changes.
If you visit the beach, choose the shade, wear protective clothing whenever possible, and apply sunscreen to exposed treated areas.
A coconut under a beach umbrella?
Perfect.
Lying in direct midday sun immediately after laser treatment?
Definitely something to avoid.

4. Shaving at the Wrong Time
Another common mistake is arriving for your appointment with hair that is either too long or freshly shaved only a few hours earlier.
The ideal preparation is usually to shave about two days before your appointment, allowing a tiny amount of hair to become visible above the skin.
This small amount of hair helps your therapist clearly identify the treatment area while still allowing the laser to work efficiently.
If the hair is too long, some laser energy may be wasted on the hair above the skin rather than reaching the follicle.
If the skin has just been shaved completely smooth, it can be more difficult to clearly identify every hair, depending on the area and hair type.
At Firefly Laser Bali, if a client arrives without shaving, our therapists carefully prepare the area before treatment so the session can still be performed safely and effectively.
For a full step-by-step checklist, read our guide on how to prepare for laser hair removal.
5. Not Telling Your Therapist About Sun Exposure, Tanning or Skin Sensitivity
Another mistake is thinking small skin changes do not matter.
They do.
Recent sun exposure, tanning, irritation, sensitivity, active breakouts, medication changes or hormonal shifts can all affect how your therapist adjusts your treatment.
This does not mean you cannot have laser hair removal.
It simply means your therapist needs the right information to choose the safest and most effective settings for your skin on that day.
At Firefly Laser Bali, we always prefer clients to tell us more rather than less.
If you already have a tan or naturally darker skin, read our dedicated guide to laser hair removal for tanned skin in Bali.
6. Expecting Every Area of the Body to Respond the Same Way
Not every treatment area behaves the same.
Underarms, legs, Brazilian, face, chest and back can all respond differently because hair thickness, density, hormones and growth cycles vary by area.
Some areas may show quick visible improvement.
Others may need more time and consistency.
This is completely normal.
For example, body areas with thicker, darker hair often respond faster than areas with finer hair. Technology also matters, which is why we explain the difference between diode vs alexandrite laser hair removal in Bali.
The Small Details That Make a Big Difference
One thing we have learned after performing thousands of laser hair removal treatments is this:
The laser itself is only part of the journey.
Following the correct aftercare, staying consistent with your appointments and understanding how laser hair removal works often make the difference between good results and excellent long-term results.
At Firefly Laser Bali, we believe educating our clients is just as important as performing the treatment itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wax between laser hair removal sessions?
No. Waxing, plucking and epilating remove the hair root that the laser needs to target. Shaving is the recommended method between laser sessions.
How long should I avoid sun after laser hair removal?
We generally recommend avoiding direct sun exposure on treated areas for at least 48 hours after your appointment. Use sunscreen, stay in the shade and follow your therapist’s aftercare advice.
When should I shave before laser hair removal?
Most clients should shave about two days before treatment, unless their therapist gives different instructions for a specific area or hair type.
Why should I finish my laser hair removal package?
Hair grows in cycles. Completing your recommended sessions gives the laser more opportunities to treat hairs as they enter the active growth phase.
Can I still have laser hair removal if I am tanned?
In many cases, yes, but your therapist needs to assess your skin first. Always tell your therapist about recent sun exposure or tanning before treatment.
