Preparing your skin correctly before your laser hair removal session is very important to achieve the best results. At Firefly Laser & Aesthetics, we guide our clients on how to prepare their skin to ensure the treatment is both safe and effective.
Here are some important tips before your appointment.
Avoid Sun Exposure Before Your Session
Try to avoid sun exposure or tanning 2–3 days before your laser session.
When the skin is freshly tanned, it can become more sensitive to laser energy. Giving your skin a few days without sun exposure helps ensure the treatment is safer and more comfortable.
Hair Must Be Present for the Laser to Work
If you previously removed hair with waxing, plucking, or epilation, it is important to wait until the hair grows back before starting laser hair removal.
Laser works by targeting the hair follicle, so the hair must be present in the follicle for the treatment to be effective.
Shave the Area Before the Session
We recommend shaving the treatment area about 2 days before your appointment.
When hair is shaved, the root remains inside the skin, which allows the laser energy to travel down to the follicle.
Ideally, the hair should be just slightly visible at the surface. This means the hair is not too long (which can disperse the laser energy) but still visible enough for the laser to effectively target the follicle from the tip to the root.
Many clients describe this stage as the moment when the hair feels slightly “prickly” or stubbly.
If you forgot and only remembered your appointment on the same day, it is not a problem. You can still shave with a razor.
However, shave in the same direction that your hair grows, not against it.
When you shave in the direction of hair growth, a small tip of the hair usually remains, which is ideal for laser treatment.
If you are unsure, you can also come with the hair as it is. Our therapist has the proper technique to shave the area with a razor before the laser session if necessary.
What to Expect After Your First Laser Session
Some clinics require several sessions before clients notice any visible changes. However, at Firefly many clients start noticing results after the first session.
Laser hair removal is a progressive treatment that requires multiple sessions, but early signs often include:
- Patchy hair growth
- Some areas where hair stops growing
- Slower hair regrowth
These early changes show that the treatment is already affecting the hair follicles.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions varies depending on each client’s body, hair type, and individual characteristics.
On average, most clients need between 6 and 12 sessions to achieve optimal results.
Some clients may reach their final result faster in certain cases, as few as 4 sessions but this varies from person to person.
Time Between Laser Sessions
The recommended interval between sessions is 3 to 5 weeks.
This timing is important because laser hair removal works by targeting hair during specific growth cycles.
If sessions are delayed too long, the hairs that were about to stop growing may restart their cycle. This can slow the overall progress of the treatment.
For this reason, we recommend scheduling your sessions consistently and planning your appointments ahead of travel.
If you will be away for an extended period, it is best to schedule your laser treatment before traveling or continue the treatment at a reputable clinic where you are staying.
Will I Need Maintenance Sessions?
Yes. Even after achieving your desired results, occasional maintenance sessions may be needed.
Most clients return once or twice per year to ensure the hair follicle remains inactive and the skin stays smooth.
Can I Go to the Beach After Laser Hair Removal?
If you are planning to go to the beach, it is best to go a few days before your session or wait 2–3 days after the treatment.
Avoid sun exposure immediately before or after laser hair removal because the skin may be slightly sensitive.
We recommend waiting about 48 hours before exposing the treated area to:
- Direct sun
- Salt water
- Swimming pools with chlorine
This helps protect the skin and ensures a safer recovery after the treatment.
